Created by the 1872-1873 territorial legislature as Burbank County, being named for John A. Burbank (1827-1905), governor of Dakota Territory from 1869 to 1873. It was renamed at the 1874-1875 session for Judge Alanson H. Barnes (1818-1890), associate justice assigned to the northern half of the territory. Government organized: January 6, 1879. County Seat: Valley City, 1879-present.
The Barnes County Courthouse is located at 230 4th St. NW, Valley City. Occupants of the Courthouse include the Auditor and Tax Director’s Office, Recorder’s Office, Treasurer’s Office, State’s Attorney Office, Information Technology, District Court and Juvenile Court.
The Police Station is located at 216 2nd Ave NE, Valley City. The Sheriff’s Department is located at 575 10th St SW Ste 4, Valley City. The Barnes County Correctional Facility is located at 491 2nd Ave NW, Valley City. The building houses Communications Center/9-1-1 and Correctional Center.
