About Us
The Barnes County Veterans Services Department provides information and assistance for compensation benefits, pensions, admission to the North Dakota Veterans Home, request for military records and decorations, home loan eligibility, life insurance, education benefits, and many more referrals to help veterans in a variety of areas.
We are your local resource for dedicated and professional assistance in obtaining federal and state veterans’ benefits. We provide the expertise and advocacy that Veterans and their families need to optimize their access to the benefits they earned.
Services we offer:
•Comprehensive benefits counseling
•Claims preparation and submission
•Claims follow-up to ensure final decisions
•Initiate and develop when appropriate
•Networking and advocacy with federal, state and local agencies
•Certification of discharge papers (DD-214) for filing claims with the VA.
Information and referral for the following:
•Public assistance
•Defense Finance and Accounting Services
•Homeless issues
•Military Service Center
Assistance offered in filing for the following benefits:
•Compensation (service-related injuries or disease).
•Re-open compensation claims for increase or re-evaluation.
•Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for survivors (based upon •service-connected disability or death).
•Nonservice-connected pension (for war-era veterans only).
•Death pension (for survivors of wartime era veterans only).
•Admission to the State Veterans Home.
•Request for military records and decorations.
•Discharge upgrade and correction of military records.
•VA home loan guarantee eligibility.
•Education benefits (VA).
•Disability life insurance and waiver of premiums
•Payment of proceeds of VA life insurance.
•Burial benefits (VA).
•Medical care/dental care at VA facilities.
These services are provided at NO CHARGE to Veterans and their dependents.

Confidential information…
Whether supplied by the veteran, the state or US Department of Veterans Affairs, or other parties shall remain confidential and will not be released or discussed except to those personally connected to the case with a need to know in order to assist the veteran or the veterans’ dependents.
The Veterans Service Officer or Representative…
•Will prepare and perfect all claims to the best of his or her ability with the intent of affording the claimant the benefits to which they are entitled and ensure that all information is true and factual to the best of his/her knowledge.
•Will maintain high professional standards in dealing with other service officers, (federal, state, and local), other people, and agencies as necessary in service to his or her client.
•Will provide services without prejudice to all people making a claim to the state or US Department of Veterans Affairs.
•Will, to the best of his or her ability, maintain a working knowledge of all rules and regulations concerning veterans’ benefits and will strive to keep such knowledge updated considering constantly changing laws and regulations.
•Will not, under any circumstances, accept remuneration in cash or other form for services rendered.
•Will not, under any circumstances, serve as guardians, committees, or fiduciaries for any other individuals receiving benefits from the US Department of Veterans Affairs or any other agency.
