Highway Department

The Barnes County Highway Department is responsible for the efficient planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and culverts within the County of Barnes.  The Department provides for the overall management, direction, coordination and budgeting for approximately 330 miles of County black top and gravel roads.  There are 20 full-time employees and 3 part-time seasonal employees on staff.

Seasonal Load Restrictions in effect beginning at 7:00 AM, March 10th, 2025.

All county highways are restricted to 6 ton per axle and truck 35 MPH with the following exceptions.

Barnes County 17- South (Old #1)- NO TRUCKS.

Barnes County 27 – Steele County line to ND 32- Legal Loads & Truck 35 MPH.

Barnes County 7- City of Leal to ND 9- Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.

Barnes County 10- ND #1 to Rogers Elevator- Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.

Barnes County 11 – City of Sanborn to I94 – Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.

Barnes County 22 – From Barnes County 20 to I94- Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.

Barnes County 27 – (Peak Road)- from Peak Elevator to I94- Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.

Barnes County 11- City of Litchville to ND 46- Legal Loads & Trucks 35 MPH.
